Job Opportunity: Educational Sign Language Interpreter
Location: Virginia Beach, VA
Position Type: Contract
Duration:36 Weeks
About the Role
We are seeking a qualified and compassionate Educational Sign Language Interpreter to support deaf and hard-of-hearing students in accessing equitable education. This role is essential in facilitating communication between students and educators, peers, and staff within the academic environment.
Using American Sign Language (ASL), the interpreter will translate spoken language into sign language and vice versa, ensuring students receive full access to classroom instruction, activities, and discussions.
Key Responsibilities
- Interpret spoken language into ASL and ASL into spoken language during classroom instruction, school events, and peer interactions.
- Collaborate with educators and support staff to implement accommodations aligned with students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
- Maintain confidentiality and uphold professional standards of practice.
- Provide cultural and linguistic mediation when appropriate to enhance student understanding.
Minimum Requirements
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in interpreting, deaf studies, or a related field (preferred)
- State Board of Education Initial Sign Language Interpreter Certificate (as applicable)
- Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) certificate (as required by state or client)
- Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification (as required by state or client)
- Compliance with all relevant professional standards of practice
- Current CPR certification (if applicable)
- TB questionnaire, PPD test, or chest x-ray (if applicable)
- Current health certificate (per contract or state regulation)
- Must meet all federal, state, and local requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age
