Position Summary M-F full time 

This is the career levelof this job family where employees are assigned responsibility for performing afull range of nursing assignments as a STI Nurse Educator & Rapid Start RNand perform nursing task at the full performance level in providing care topatients or clients. Responsibilities will include providing guidance andtraining to others in completing routine nursing task and activities.

The STI Nurse Educator & Rapid Start RN (RN)sexually transmitted infections (STI) assessment, treatment, and training nursefor the Sexual Health and Harm Reduction Service (SHHRS). Candidate must bewilling to travel and work on an on-call schedule with the SHHRS DiseaseIntervention Specialists (DIS) Teams for provision of HIV/STI assessment,treatment and sexual health prevention education to individuals, or groups in amulti-county area across Oklahoma in nonclinical setting as directed by SHHRSRapid Start Manager/STI Nurse Consultant and Rapid Start Advanced PracticeRegistered Nurse (APRN). The candidate will be comfortable working withhigh-risk patients such as HIV/STI and Hepatitis C, who are at increased riskof secondary infections. This candidate will also manage and administer STIAcademy trainings. Duties will include the assessment of individual health,interpreting test results to determine medical and nursing care needed,planning a treatment strategy to meet identified needs and evaluating responsesto treatment interventions as approved and directed by SHHRS Rapid StartManager/STI Nurse Consultant and Rapid Start Advanced Practice Registered Nurse(APRN).

Position Responsibilities /Essential Functions

·       Initiation and engaging in sexual health conversations withclients and colleagues.

·       Obtain sexual history and risk assessment.

·       Obtain specimens for STI screening including serology, rapid test,urine, or PCR swab for gonorrhea/chlamydia.

·       Performs vital signs and comprehensive physical examinations forSTI symptom assessment.

·       Administer oral and intramuscular medications for STI treatmentper established protocols, or order of an APRN or Medical Director.

·       Recognize symptoms of allergic/anaphylaxis reaction and syndromicconditions (neurosyphilis, epididymitis etc.)

·       Review lab results to assist with determining a treatment strategyto meet identified care needs.

·       Assist in evaluating responses to interventions and making changesin care treatment as needed per established protocol.

·       Provide client centered STI information regarding STI diagnosis,STI prevention/harm reduction counseling and education including use of condomsand other STI prevention barrier devices.

·       Assist with providing a level of expertise in HIV/STI diagnosis,treatment, prevention, and training modalities according to CDC guidelines.

·       Coordination of care/client referrals to higher level of forassessment of neurosyphilis or penicillin desensitization.

·       Consults and collaborates with physicians and community-basedproviders as needed related to patient care and follow up.

·       Performs nursing procedures or specialized functions in accordancewith knowledge, skills and licensure.

·       Perform initial patient work-up including blood pressure checks,weight checks, height and other check list initial work-up tasks as directed byRapid Start APRN or PA.

·       Educate clients on HIV, syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea.

·       Assist the DIS program when needed and with prior approval fromRapid Start Manager with field treatment of syphilis during outreach testingand screening events.

·       Manage STI Academy two-day training for OSDH and community nursesincluding the coordination of presenters and training, creation and updating oftraining materials, presenting and skills check off of training including theissuance of completion certificates to nurses that complete the training andreturn their skills check list.

·       Teaches basic nursing skills and related principles.

·       Assassessing testing and treatment records in PHIDDO for HIV,chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis for Rapid Start clients.

·       Data entry in PHIDDO on lab results received from the lab onclients.  

·       Provide PrEP clients on education on the different PrEP options.

·       Provide patient education on vaccines and treatments and possibleside effects.

·       Navigate prior authorization requests for clients for HIVtreatment, PrEP, PEP and HCV treatment with insurance companies anddrug-assistance programs.

·       Assessing, reporting, and recording health status of patients in avariety of settings.

·       Participates in developing and implementing appropriate aspects ofa plan of care.

·       Administers medications as ordered.

·       Reports appropriate patient information to supervisor orappropriate health team member.

·       Assist with training practicum students on an as needed basis.

·       Public speaking is a requirement as well as presenting in front oflarge audiences

·       Independently create sexual health presentations based on CDCrecommendations

·       Work with Rapid Start Clinicians needs and as directed by RapidStart Manager.

·       Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

Requirements consist ofpossession of a valid permanent Oklahoma license as a Registered Nurse asapproved by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing (BSN preferred); plus three years ofnursing experience in a HIV/STI clinic.

Valued Knowledge, skills and abilities

Knowledge of nursing techniques, procedures,practices, and theory, of medical terminology, and of infection controlmeasures.  Ability is required to exercise sound judgment; to followdetailed oral or written instructions; and to establish and maintain effectiveworking relationships with others; plus demonstrated ability to provide nursingcare to patients or clients. Ability is required to assess condition and needsof patients, families and communities appropriate to the care setting; to take appropriateintervention; to counsel and teach patients and families; and to providedirection or guidance to non-licensed personnel in assigned area ofresponsibility to ensure quality care. Certification by the American HeartAssociation (AHA) in Basic Life Support (BLS) Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation(CPR) required. Advanced knowledge of HIV and STIs is required.
