School Registered Nurse oversees the application of the nursing process and the delivery of student care in a school setting. The School RN supports the physical, mental and emotional well-being of students within the school setting. The School RN plays an essential role in promoting the health and safety, responding to medical emergencies, managing chronic conditions and serving as a liaison between families, school staff and healthcare providers. The School RN provides services in accordance with Amergis’ philosophy, standards, policies and physician orders.  

Minimum Requirements:  

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment
  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferred 
  • School Nurse Certification as required by state or contract
  • One year of school nursing, public health or pediatric experience, preferred  
  • Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice  
  • Current CPR if applicable 
  • TB questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable  
  • Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation)  
  • Must meet all federal, state and local requirements  
  • Must be at least 18 years of age

    Schedule:

    Approximately 155 days of work (up to 40 hours/week) on the school calendar schedule from now until June:

    • no holidays
    • no overtime
    • occasional Fridays when students are at school
    • 2 weeks off for Winter/holiday break (Dec 22-Jan2)
    • 1 week off for Spring Break (March 23-27)

    Position Details (Age group, Caseload, Duties):

     Here is a summary of duties:

     

    1. Instruction & Training

    • Instruct students, staff, and families on nursing techniques to meet daily medical needs.
    • Provide training on student Health Management Plans (HMPs) and medical protocols.
    • Present at in-services and workshops on school health and improvement topics.

    2. Health Management & Program Development

    • Develop, implement, and monitor Health Management Plans based on student needs, medical knowledge, and developmental understanding.
    • Manage, evaluate, and modify school health programs as needed.
    • Coordinate services with families and community agencies, including referrals for additional care.

    3. Assessment & Documentation

    • Conduct and interpret health assessments; use data to guide planning and school services.
    • Write clear, timely summaries, recommendations, and medical reports.
    • Prepare and maintain required records, charts, and Medicaid documentation.

    4. Collaboration & Communication

    • Communicate effectively with students, families, district staff, agency partners, and the public.
    • Provide guidance to school teams regarding medical conditions and their impact on learning.
    • Support and monitor staff to whom nursing tasks are delegated.

    5. Professional Responsibilities

    • Adhere to HIPAA laws, professional ethics, and all applicable regulations for nursing in schools.
    • Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and sound judgment in all responsibilities.
    • Engage in ongoing professional development to maintain and improve nursing practice.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the needs of the district and students.
