The Emergency Department Registered Nurse assumes responsibility and accountability for the application of the nursing process and the delivery of patient care in the emergency room setting or other emergent critical care areas.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care
- Uses clinical judgment to manage delivery of patient care safely and effectively
- Triages effectively according to the severity and critical nature of patients’ condition
- Comprehensively assesses a patient’s needs, obtaining their medical history and personal information, and seeking a doctor’s evaluation immediately for life-threatening issues
- Communicates with other medical professionals involved in the patient’s care in a timely manner
- Identifies and recognizes abnormal symptoms and changes in patient condition, established priorities, and takes appropriate action
- Carries out providers orders accurately and timely
- Performs, delegates, and supervises patient care activities within the scope of practice to meet the age-appropriate patient care needs
- Performs and/or assists in emergency treatment as required in accordance with RN scope of practice
- Follows emergency policies, procedures and protocols in an effective manner
- Assesses the patient’s physical, psychosocial, environmental, social, and educational needs
- Develops, implements and updates patient’s plan of care, including the education and discharge plan based on evidence-based practice standards and patient/family needs in collaboration with multi-disciplinary healthcare team
- Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements:
- Current Registered Nurse License within the state of practice
- Minimum of one year emergency room experience preferred
- Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice
- Participation and completion of Amergis’ Competency program when applicable
- Current CPR if applicable
- TB Questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable
- Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation)
- Must meet all federal, state and local requirements
- Successful completion of new hire training as applicable to job site
- Understand patient confidentiality and HIPAA requirements
- Ability to effectively elicit/provide information to and from appropriate individuals (including, but not limited to, supervisors, co-workers, clients) via strong communication skills; proficiency in the English language is required
- Computer proficiency required
- Must be at least 18 years of age

Position Title: Emergency Room Staff RN
Position Description: Assesses/reassesses infants, toddlers, children, and adolescents, young adult, adult, and elderly patients and applies the nursing process as appropriate to: • Care of patients in emergent and/or non-emergent situations • Airway Management • Pain Management • Cardiac Monitoring • Invasive Monitoring • Specialized IV Drips/titration • Sedation • Assist with specialized procedures, i.e., Temp Pacemakers, Cardioversion, Defibrillation, chest tubes, care of fractures, assist with wound repair, etc. • Use specialized equipment in the care of emergency patients • Manages Code Blue in the Elliott building • Troubleshooting • COBRA/ EMTALA • IV Therapy • Infusion Therapy • Medication Administration • ECG Strip Analysis and Interpretation • “Time Out” • Discharge follow-up education care • Traumas’ • Information Management
Position Skills: Provides professional nursing care to assigned patients utilizing the nursing process, within established standards and practices for assigned patients. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes to ensure optimal patient care as indicated. 2. Performs a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and re-assessments as per policy. 3. Provides individualized, age-specific care that supports hemeostatic regulation, hemodynamic monitoring and physiologic functioning. 4. Maintains accurate and continued nursing documentation including patient histories, conditions, treatments, responses, and assessment of changes. 5. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Maintains patient confidentiality. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and families. Functions as patient advocate. 6. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patients served. Able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group. 7. Interacts professionally with patient and family and involves patient and family in the formation of an individualized and mutually agreed upon plan of care. Reviews/revises/updates/resolves plan of care daily. 8. Formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs and evaluates the effectiveness of learning; includes family in teaching, as appropriate. 9. Supervises other health care staff involved in patient care. Allocates and monitors the work of others. 10. Demonstrates the ability to assist physicians with procedures in the department. 11. Responds promptly to changes in workload as necessary to achieve optimal productivity and efficiency. 12. Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of performance improvement activities to improve patient outcomes, processes, and the work of the environment. 13. Functions as a preceptor to orient new employees. 14. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meeting, staff meetings, and workshops; shows responsibility for own professional practice and on-going education. 15. Maintains operation of patient care equipment to include mechanical adjustments. Ensures an adequate stock of supplies and the proper functioning of equipment. Assists in cost containment through the appropriate ordering and conserving of supplies and equipment. 16. Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations. 17. Meets all departmental specific competencies. 18. Performs housekeeping duties when needed. 19. Assists with transportation of patients when needed. 20. Adheres to dress code. 21. Adheres to medical center policies addressing infection control, safety, and personnel guidelines. 22. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. 23. Serves as team leader and role model for other staff members.
