- The primary role of a Medical Scribe is to assist physicians by accurately documenting patient encounters and medical information into the Electronic Health Record (EHR) in real-time.
- They aim to free up the provider’s time for direct patient care, resulting in increased efficiency, improved patient satisfaction, and a more streamlined workflow.
Responsibilities
- Real-time Documentation:
- Accompanying the healthcare provider during patient visits, either in person or virtually, to observe and document the interaction.
- Recording the patient’s history, chief complaints, physical exam findings, assessments, diagnoses, treatment plans, and other evaluations.
- Documenting procedures performed by the physician and other healthcare professionals.
- Medical Record Management:
- Accurately entering information into the patient’s EHR system.
- Updating patient histories, physical exams, and other relevant health information.
- Monitoring the duration of lab results and screening procedures.
- Preparing and assembling medical record documentation for physician review and signature.
- Ensuring medical record compliance and adhering to privacy regulations such as HIPAA.
- Administrative and Clerical Support (as needed and permitted by facility policy):
- Ordering X-rays, referrals, or other diagnostic tests under the physician’s direction.
- Assisting with administrative tasks like handling phone calls and organizing documentation.
- Facilitating the completion of admission, transfer, and discharge forms.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience:
- One (1) year of experience providing nursing in a medical or psychiatric setting.
- License:
- Possession of a valid California license as a Psychiatric Technician, Registered Nurse, or Licensed Vocational Nurse.
- Possess a valid California driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain.
- Skills:
- Typing Speed and Accuracy: Fast and accurate typing skills are essential, with some employers preferring 60 words per minute or more.
- Attention to Detail: Meticulous documentation of patient information and physician instructions is crucial.
- Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills are necessary for effective interaction with physicians, patients, and other healthcare professionals.
- Computer Literacy: Proficiency in using Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, word processing, and database software programs is highly valued.
- Organizational and Time Management Skills: The ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple patients, and maintain efficiency in a fast-paced environment is important.
- Adaptability and Quick Thinking: The ability to adjust to different physicians, patient scenarios, and workflows is beneficial.
- Professionalism and Work Ethic: Punctuality, reliability, and a commitment to high-quality work are expected.
