The Educational Sign Language Interpreter supports staff,students, and families by providing interpretation and translation services fordeaf and hearing-impaired students. The interpreter also effectivelyfacilitates communication between students who use sign language due to hearingloss, and students/teachers who do not. 

 

EssentialDuties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Interpretation Services: Provide sign language interpretation for deaf or hard of hearing students during classroom instruction, school meetings, and extracurricular activities.
  • Communication Facilitation: Work closely with teachers and other school staff to ensure effective communication with deaf or hard of hearing students.
  • Student Assistance: Assist students in understanding and following classroom instructions.
  • Transcription Services: Provide transcription services when necessary.
  • Adaptation: Adapt interpretation methods to fit individual students’ learning styles.
  • Subject Matter Understanding: Maintain an understanding of various subject matters to accurately interpret academic content.
  • Meeting Participation: Participate in meetings with parents, teachers, and other educational staff to discuss student progress and educational plans.
  • Professional Development: Stay updated on new sign language trends and teaching methods.
  • Ethical Compliance: Follow all legal and ethical interpreting guidelines.
  • Confidentiality: Maintain student confidentiality and respect students’ rights and dignity at all times 

 

MinimumRequirements: 

  • State Board of Education Initial Sign Language Interpreter Certificate (as applicable)
  • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) certificate (as applicable per state regulation or client requirement)
  • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification (as applicable per state regulation or client requirement)
  • Current CPR if applicable 
  • TB Questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable 
  • Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation) 
  • Must meet all federal, state and local requirements 
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
