The Educational Sign Language Interpreter supports staff,students, and families by providing interpretation and translation services fordeaf and hearing-impaired students. The interpreter also effectivelyfacilitates communication between students who use sign language due to hearingloss, and students/teachers who do not.
EssentialDuties and Responsibilities:
- Interpretation Services: Provide sign language interpretation for deaf or hard of hearing students during classroom instruction, school meetings, and extracurricular activities.
- Communication Facilitation: Work closely with teachers and other school staff to ensure effective communication with deaf or hard of hearing students.
- Student Assistance: Assist students in understanding and following classroom instructions.
- Transcription Services: Provide transcription services when necessary.
- Adaptation: Adapt interpretation methods to fit individual students’ learning styles.
- Subject Matter Understanding: Maintain an understanding of various subject matters to accurately interpret academic content.
- Meeting Participation: Participate in meetings with parents, teachers, and other educational staff to discuss student progress and educational plans.
- Professional Development: Stay updated on new sign language trends and teaching methods.
- Ethical Compliance: Follow all legal and ethical interpreting guidelines.
- Confidentiality: Maintain student confidentiality and respect students’ rights and dignity at all times
MinimumRequirements:
- State Board of Education Initial Sign Language Interpreter Certificate (as applicable)
- Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) certificate (as applicable per state regulation or client requirement)
- Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification (as applicable per state regulation or client requirement)
- Current CPR if applicable
- TB Questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable
- Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation)
- Must meet all federal, state and local requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age
