General Comments
DJJ Medical provides medical care to youth within our system at various facilities. This includes things like medication passing, sick call, PRN medical needs, assisting providers during exams, staff advice on youth medical concerns, etc. Nurses are responsible for being present when providers are there to do physicals, lab draws, and documentation. The hours vary by facilities, but in general there is an AM shift (7-3) and PM shift (12-8) in all facilities as well as an overnight shift (7p-7a) in our Detention Centers. These hours may vary some by facility. We have several different types of facilities within our department, but the main ones that we staff with nursing are Detention Centers, Youth Development Centers, and Group Homes/ATD:
Detention Centers (DCs): These are sort of the “first stop” for youth who come to our system. They are high turnover facilities, typically with the highest census out of the 3. These are youth that are not yet committed to DJJ, and most of the time are either waiting for placement or for court.
Youth Development Centers (YDC’s): These are youth that are committed to us and staying at this facility for a certain amount of time. Most of these are camp style bunking, but they all live at the facilities 24/7.
Group Homes/ATD: These are lower level facilities that still house youth 24/7, however the max out typically around 8-9 youth. Most of them are actual houses that have been converted over to a facility. We usually only need about 4 hours of nursing care here.
