POSITION PURPOSE:
Provides rehabilitation care services in accordance with the policies of MHS and directives of the medical staff. Possess the ability to comprehend and follow written or verbal instruction or directions. Adheres to MHS Standard Precaution policy and procedure. Performs other duties as requested by supervisor. Work with  supervisors, other department managers and medical staff in order to provide the best patient care possible.

Specializes in diagnosis and treatment of speech and language problems, and engages in scientific study of human communication.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Diagnoses and evaluates speech language skills as related to educational, medical, social, and psychological factors.
  • Plans, directs, or conducts rehabilitative treatment programs to restore communicative efficiency of individuals with communication problems of organic and non-organic etiology.
  • Provides counseling and guidance and language development therapy to disabled individuals.
  • Reviews individual file to obtain background information prior to evaluation to determine appropriate tests and to ensure that adequate information is available.
  • Administers, scores, and interprets specialized hearing and speech tests.
  • Develops and implements individualized plans for assigned clients to meet individual needs, interest, and abilities.
  • Evaluates and monitors individuals.
  • Reviews treatment plans, and assesses individual performance to modify, change, or write new programs.
  • Maintains records as required by law, establishment’s policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Attends meetings and conferences and participates in other activities to promote professional growth.
  • Instructs individuals to monitor their own speech and provides ways to practice new skills.
  • Acts as consultant to educational, medical, and other professional groups.
  • Conducts research to develop diagnostic and remedial techniques.
  • Serves as consultant to classroom teachers to incorporate speech and language development activities into daily schedule.
  • Teaches manual sign language to student incapable of speaking.
  • Maintains positive and effective relationships with other departments and the Medical Staff.
  • Maintains open communication and problem solving atmosphere with other departments to achieve quality patient care.
  • Any other job duty as allowed by licensure.
  • Attends in-service training at the request of their Director, including hospital orientation and Annual Skills Fair.
  • Will be preceptor to new hires as requested.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION:

  • Fifth year college or university program certificate; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current license from the State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
  • BLS required within 30 days of hire.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to lift over 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to bend, squat, push, stoop, and pull as needed especially in fulfilling job responsibilities.
