Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)
Licensing Requirements
- Provider shall possess and maintain throughout the term of this Agreement, a current and valid MFT license issued by the California Board of Behavioral Science in order to perform services in the State of California.
- Provider shall comply with all federal, State, and local requirements including the California Code of Regulations (CCR) Title 22, Division 5, Chapter 12, Article 1, Section 79543.
MFT Qualifications
- Minimum of twelve (12) continuous months of experience within the last three (3) years performing services similar in scope to those defined herein, in a public or private institution. Internship does not count towards the required experience.
- Must have the required licenses, permits, registrations, and/or certifications noted herein.
- Education: Completion of a master’s degree program from an accredited school for Marriage and Family Therapy, that meets the requirements stipulated in Business and Professional Code 4980.36.
Service Delivery Requirements
The MFT shall provide services as permitted within the scope of practice for a MFT in accordance with institution/facility policies and procedures. Under the direction/supervision of the Supervising Psychiatric Social Worker or designee, MFT’s duties/responsibilities shall include, but are not limited to the following:
- Conduct assessments, and provide clinical treatment interventions such as brief counseling, group therapy, and individual counseling.
- Consult and collaborate with other disciplines for the care and treatment of patients and participate in interdisciplinary care planning and coordination.
- Perform assessments that assist with and facilitate transitional care planning and coordination that links patients with community resources and services as they release from facility.
- Conduct assessments to determine appropriate level of intervention, education, and counseling services within the context of marriage, couples and family systems as well as individual biopsychosocial dimensions with specific solution-focused, attainable therapeutic goals.
- Conduct Cognitive Behavior Therapy for individuals with Substance Use Disorders (SUD), either in 1:1 and/or group settings to modify intrapersonal and interpersonal behaviors.
- Conduct assessments for patients preparing for release from facility.
- Provide education and counseling services to individuals that encourage the development of life skills and strategies for coping and confronting issues related to SUD.
- Develop and/or contribute to treatment and care plans.
- Review patient files, gather data, and complete reports and other required documentation.
- Make recommendations to the care teams, effectively communicate, and collaborate with the patient and all disciplines involved in the care of the patients.
- Document and evaluate patients’ progress with programming and facilitate discharges and transfers in coordination with other treatment and rehabilitative programs.
- Work with institutional rehabilitative partners and custody staff to assess patient’s participation and progress in services.
- Attend all case conferences, trainings, meetings and committees as directed, and perform other duties as required.
