The School Credential RN (SCRN) plays a crucial role in identifying and treating health conditions among students within the school setting. The SCRN also provides essential instruction on general wellbeing and disease prevention. Assessing students’ physical conditions and referring them to appropriate resources is key to ensuring their success in school.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • IEP Participation: Engage in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, including assessment planning, health history, or medical reviews for students.
  • Health Promotion: Advocate for healthy practices and nursing services to support students’ success in general education classes.
  • Service Coordination: Collaborate with other special services personnel within the school to support students.
  • Communication: Liaise with school administrators, teachers, and staff about students with specific health issues, adhering to HIPAA and federal laws.
  • Policy Adherence: Follow district policies for health, emergency care, accidents, drug abuse, and bullying.
  • Disease Notification: Inform school administrators, local health departments, parents, and staff about confirmed communicable diseases.
  • IEP Goals: Develop IEP goals related to students’ health conditions impacting their learning.
  • Reporting: Complete and file school and state reports on screenings, immunizations, physicals, etc.
  • Record Keeping: Document pertinent information in students’ health files.
  • Compliance Monitoring: Ensure the school health program complies with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Health Reporting: Prepare health reports for supervisors, the board of education, and the health department.
  • First Aid and Services: Provide first aid care and medically prescribed services.
  • Supply Security: Maintain the security of school health supplies and medications.
  • Health Education: Instruct students in health education according to the state curriculum.
  • Resource Person: Serve as a resource on health issues.
  • Staff Development: Provide health-related staff development for school staff and volunteers.
  • Health Screenings: Conduct health appraisals for students and staff.
  • Follow-Up Evaluations: Provide follow-up evaluations for students as required.
  • Corrective Actions: Recommend corrective actions when health problems are identified.
  • Parent Correspondence: Communicate with parents about their children’s health needs.
  • Growth and Development: Identify abnormal growth and development, and discuss concerns with parents.
  • Service Coordination: Facilitate services between the school, local health agencies, and other community resources.
  • Relationship Building: Develop positive working relationships.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Licensure: Current nursing license for the state of practice.
  • Certification: Certification or credential in school nursing.
  • Experience: At least one year of prior school nursing experience; pediatric experience preferred.
  • Professional Standards: Comply with all relevant professional standards of practice.
  • Competency Program: Participate in and complete Amegis’ Competency program, if applicable.
  • CPR Certification: Current CPR certification, if applicable.
  • Health Screening: TB Questionnaire, PPD, or chest x-ray, if applicable.
  • Health Certificate: Current health certificate as per contract or state regulation.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Meet all federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Training: Successfully complete new hire training as applicable to the job site.
  • Confidentiality: Understand patient confidentiality and HIPAA requirements.
  • Communication Skills: Strong communication skills to effectively elicit and provide information to and from appropriate individuals.
  • Computer Proficiency: Required computer proficiency.
  • Age Requirement: Must be at least 18 years of age.
