The Progressive Care Unit RN, as a professionalpractitioner, assumes the responsibility and accountability for deliveringpatient care to telemetry/progressive care patients. The Progressive Care UnitRN demonstrates the ability to make clinical judgments in an effective andefficient manner with supervision. This individual employs critical thinkingand performance ability in the coordinator of patient care, consistentlyperforms according to nursing standards, and is accountable in managing patientcare and assisting others in the management of patient care.  The Progressive Care Unit RN is sometimesalso called a step-down nurse, cardiac stepdown, neuro stepdown, surgicalstepdown and in some medical centers, the PCU is also known as a transition orintermedia unit. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement andevaluate patient care on a progressive care unit
  • Performs focused interviews to identify specific patients’needs
  • Assesses signs and symptoms indicating physiologic andpsychosocial changes in the patient’s condition
  • Collects, analyzes, and interprets data and information fromhealth care members and documents actual and/or potential nursing diagnoses
  • Documents the patient’s plan of care using identifiednursing diagnoses, expected patient outcomes, and selected nursinginterventions
  • Identifies and prioritizes actions based upon patient carerequirements
  • Performs interventions according to identified priorities,plan of care, and the hospital policies and patient care outcome standard
  • Provides a safe, comfortable and therapeutic patientenvironment
  • Initiates and evaluates patient and/or family education
  • Revises the plan of care according to evaluation, changes inmedical plan of care, effective/ineffective nursing interventions
  • Documents patient’s response to nursing and otherinterventions
  • Uses clinical judgment in evaluation activities to meetpatient care needs of an assigned unit/floor including establishing priorities
  • Monitors safety and effectiveness of the environment andequipment

Minimum Requirements:

  • Current Registered Nurse License for the state in which thenurse practices
  • One year prior professional nursing experience preferredwith one year progressive care unit experience preferred
  • Complies with all relevant professional standards ofpractice 
  • Participation and completion of Amergis’ Competency programwhen applicable
  • Current CPR if applicable
  • TB questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable 
  • Current Health certificate (per contract or stateregulation) 
  • Must meet all federal, state and local requirements 
  • Successful completion of new hire training as applicable tojob site 
  • Understand patient confidentiality and HIPAArequirements  
  • Ability to effectively elicit/provide information to andfrom appropriate individuals (including, but not limited to, supervisors,co-workers, clients) via strong communication skills; proficiency in theEnglish language is required  
  • Computer proficiency required 
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
