The Laboratory Assistant, under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Manager, is responsible for providing general assistance to laboratory personnel. Specific duties and skills will vary based on the assigned laboratory section.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides quality customer service in each patient interaction by providing instruction, emotional support or other patient care to obtain specimens
- Receives and handles laboratory specimens, equipment and supplies
- Delivers samples and supplies to various laboratory departments
- Prepares specimen or fluid samples to transport from the collection site to laboratories
- Use designated carrier service to send specimens at the end of each shift
- Assists with inventory control of laboratory supplies
- Performs basic office and clerical duties as assigned
- Assists laboratory personnel as needed
- Performs basic laboratory tests as directed
- Correct utilization of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Assists in maintaining a clean laboratory work environment
- Dispose of unused specimens in accordance with clinic protocol and applicable laws, standards, or policies
- Compliance with workplace policies and procedures for risk identification, risk assessment and risk control
- Ensure to comply with HIPAA, CLIA, COLA, and CAP regulatory requirements
- Performs other duties as assigned/necessary
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, biology or relevant field preferred
- High School diploma or equivalent required
- Phlebotomy certification may be required per state/contract
- One year experience working in a laboratory setting preferred
- Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice
- Participation and completion of Amergis’ Competency program when applicable
- Current CPR if applicable
- TB Questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable
- Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation)
- Must meet all federal, state and local requirements
- Successful completion of new hire training as applicable to job site
- Understand patient confidentiality and HIPAA requirements
- Ability to effectively elicit/provide information to and from appropriate individuals (including, but not limited to, supervisors, co-workers, clients) via strong communication skills; proficiency in the English language is required
- Computer proficiency required
