$42.00 – $47.00 / hour. Pay based on experience and availability. Travel Pay available to qualified candidates.
The Educational Sign Language Interpreter supports staff, students, and families by providing interpretation and translation services for deaf and hearing-impaired students. The interpreter also effectively facilitates communication between students who use sign language due to hearing loss, and students/teachers who do not.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Utilizes American Sign Language (ASL)
- Interprets oral communication into sign language and signed communication into spoken English
- Adheres to the rules of confidentiality required of all school personnel
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with teachers and other school personnel
- Works closely with students, guiding them in their own language to help understand classroom and homework instructions and facilitate independence
- Contacts families to keep them informed of school events and communicate their child’s progress in school
- Attends other mandatory training, orientations and meetings at the request of the district
- Ensures policies and procedures are compliant with Section 504 and ADA
- Maintains best practices, emerging trends and legislation relating to sign language/interpreting functional areas
- At request of school district participates in student care conference / Individualized Education Program (IEP)
- Adheres to district and Amergis policy and procedure
Minimum Requirements:
- State Board of Education Initial Sign Language Interpreter Certificate (as applicable)
- Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) certificate (as applicable per state regulation or client requirement)
- Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification (as applicable per state regulation or client requirement)
- Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice
- Participation and completion of Amergis’ Competency program when applicable
- Current CPR if applicable
- TB Questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable
- Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation)
- Must meet all federal, state and local requirements
- Successful completion of new hire training as applicable to job site
- Understand patient confidentiality and HIPAA requirements
- Ability to effectively elicit/provide information to and from appropriate individuals (including, but not limited to, supervisors, co-workers, clients) via strong communication skills; proficiency in the English language is required
- Computer proficiency required
