The Special Education Teacher, under the direction of the Special Education Program Administrator provides quality services to special education students, kindergarten through grade 12. The Special Education Teacher has a commitment to team participation in planning and implementation of student programs including special instruction, tutorial assistance and consultation with general education staff.
Minimum Requirements: MA Initial or Provisional Educator License (DESE) or Non Licensed with Special Education Experience only.
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university preferred
- Valid state teaching certificate as required by state, contract/district regulations
- Minimum of one year experience in teaching environment preferred
- State Teacher Certification; Type: Standard Elementary Teaching preferred
- State Teacher Certification; Type: Standard Secondary Teaching preferred
- State Teacher Certification; Type: Standard Special Teaching preferred
- Endorsement: Learning Behavior Specialist (LBS1) preferred
- Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice
- Current CPR if applicable
- TB questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable
- Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation)
- Must meet all federal, state and local requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age
Classroom Models
The position may involve working in one or more of the following specialized classroom settings:

ABA Embedded Sub-Separate: Intensive support with Applied Behavior Analysis strategies integrated into daily instruction

Supportive Academics: Focused academic support for students with mild to moderate disabilities
-
Inclusion: Collaborative teaching within general education classrooms to support students with IEPs
-
Elevate: Targeted intervention for students with emotional or behavioral needs
-
RISE: Specialized programming for students with significant cognitive or developmental challenges
-
Other Models: May include hybrid or evolving classroom structures based on student needs
Preferred Candidate Experience
Ideal candidates will hold a valid DESE Special Education license in one or more of the following areas:

Mild Disabilities

Moderate Disabilities
-
Severe Disabilities
Candidates who do not currently hold licensure are encouraged to apply if they can confidently address the following:
-
Experience reading, writing, and working with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
-
Experience delivering instruction, modifying curriculum, and adapting content for diverse learners
-
Familiarity with MCAS Alternate Assessments and related documentation
-
Experience managing and delegating tasks to paraprofessionals, ABA therapists, or other support staff
-
Experience leading small group instruction and managing student engagement
Role Focus
This position emphasizes instructional leadership, collaboration, and individualized support. Key responsibilities include:

Classroom management and implementation of behavior support plans

Supporting and supervising a team of paraprofessionals and ABA therapists
-
Modifying curriculum and instructional strategies to meet IEP goals
-
Attending and actively participating in IEP meetings and team consultations
-
Monitoring student progress and maintaining accurate documentation
-
Communicating effectively with families, service providers, and school staff.
