ADMINISTRATIVE SCHOOL NURSE

Description: 

Under general supervision of the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, the Administrative School Nurse provides nursing services to students; assists in planning and implementation of school health programs; serves as a resource for welfare, education and attendance problems; serves as a resource in preparing health education curricula according to District standards; provides supervision and direction for the District’s health department staff; performs other related functions as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND ASSIGNED RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assesses and evaluates the health and developmental status of students.
  • Obtains in-depth developmental histories.
  • Does follow-up on medical referrals and problems.
  • Oversees the establishment and maintenance of appropriate school health records for each student.
  • Prepares reports and required District health data.
  • Communicates the health and developmental status of the student to school personnel, parents, and the student.
  • Counsels and plans for eliminating, minimizing, accepting, or accommodating for the health issues of students which interfere with effective learning.
  • Participates in or facilitates team meetings as necessary to develop IEPs or 504 student plans.
  • Oversees public school health screening mandates such as vision, hearing, and scoliosis.
  • Implements California State mandated programs in the schools such as Immunization and Child Health Disability Prevention Program (CHDP).
  • Serves as a resource in the health instruction curriculum and assists with planning and implementing the District’s health education program.
  • Participates in the prevention and control of communicable health conditions and diseases.
  • Serves as a liaison between the parent and District in health matters.
  • Provides emergency care for injured or suddenly ill students.
  • Dispenses or supervises student medications as required.
  • Serves as a resource liaison with doctor offices, other agencies and other community services.
  • Maintains effective and timely written and oral communication with parents, staff, other school personnel, and community agencies.
  • Serves as requested on district committees and participates in various school related meetings.
  • Works with parents regarding the health problems of their children and provides information regarding community services.
  • Provides training, consultation, and supervision of staff regarding health and developmental needs of individual students.
  • Provides staff development activities related to health, safety, first aid, nutrition, disease prevention, and other related areas.
  • Proves other activities necessary to enable students and the District to accomplish objectives.
  • Provides health related services as requested by site and district administration.
  • Performs other duties similar to the above in scope and function as required.
  • Is tactful, considerate, and diplomatic in working with parents, staff, and administration.
  • Coordinates Medi-Cal billing activities, and Medi-Cal Administrative Activities (MAA).Complete other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing
  • Current California R.N. Registration
  • Possession of/eligible for California credential with authorization as school nurse
  • Possession of/ability to obtain School Audiometrist Certificate
  • Possession of/ability to obtain School Vision Screening Certificate
  • Five (5) years successful nursing experience, preferably in a school or pediatric setting
  • Valid California Driver’s License
